¡You will find the only World Water Day link from Peru here !
..
Perhaps you may care to visit  THIS  21st. Century, Water  /  Irrigation Program as well.
.

Hello.

As you will appreciate by the images on this site, there are hundreds of locations around our Peruvian deserts, where people just about exist, in most cases having to buy and transport costly Water to their homes.

Having always been interested in obtaining Water from any available source, and having received directly, valuable information on this subject, from some of our World's  very helpful Scientists, I have decided  to  help the most needed water wise, buy visiting them house to house, teaching them what they can do, also taking some sample material for them to experiment with Water Collecting, through Osmosis / Evaporation / Condensation methods, from underground as well as from the Atmosphere (Dew) .

This web site  has been constructed to help all our Human friends world wide, where if they care to do so, can feel free to copy the information given to them here.

.
.
Hello Friends of the world's deserts, specially those of Peru, and very specially those in the County of Arequipa.

During the 2nd. and 4th.. 2007, I visited the human settlements, El Milagro, UPIS Cristo Rey de La Joya and La Florida. I purposely asked them, why after having lived so long on this desert terrain, I have not yet found small green areas, the reply was obvious, " because there is no water" so I told them, that water can be found anywhere on our Planet, and specially in the deserts, and only 1" down ( obviously, the deeper you go, more evaporation, more water) where there is a great contrast between day and night time temperatures, ideal situation for trapping POTABLE Water from Underground and from the Atmosphere, the looks I received, was like saying a was crazy! but with a little patience and explanation, many have decided to experiment, as the experiment will not cost them very much.

If I have the time, I will see if I can pay a visit to our friends at the "El Chaparral" and other not too far away places. The potable underground water is obtained through Osmosis/ Evaporation and Condensation, all obtained with just piece of plastic sheeting.

The potable water obtained from the Atmosphere is through the condensation of the atmospheric humidity, like the  night Dew, costs a little more but lasts longer, consisting of a wooden and / or metal frame together with one or more Galvanized Metal sheeting (2 x 2, 3 or 4 meters) covered on one side by a 1" thick plastic Tecnoport sheet.

You can also build a "Refrigerator" which works through the evaporation system,  the hotter the exterior temperature the greater difference between the interior temperature, for this Clay built "Refrigerator" the difference between the internal and external temperatures could vary between 15 and 20ºC, ideal for conserving milk, butter fresh drinks etc.!  There are many things you can do on your own behalf, bit by bit I will be showing you by means of drawings and explanations, in the mean time, do not forget to pass the word around to your desert friends and others, all the practical work and drawings that I have shown you. I wish you all great success.

NOTE: No matter how simple your experiment may be, please do it well and with dedication, in the not too far future, these small experiments may be your life savers, as our Planet looses every day more water and ice due to the lack of consciousness and worry over our Environment. Good luck, and let us hope that very soon there will be more potable water and uncut trees everywhere.

Once there are families who have successfully built their Water Collectors, photographs will be taken of their good work and published on this site.

Collecting Fresh Water from the Fog
A very efficient way to obtain Fresh Water from the Fog,
consisting of wooden posts and galvanized wire with special Ultra Violet protected polypropylene mesh hung over the set-up. The Fog Collecting method has already been tried and proved successfully by professors Robert Schemenauer (Canada) and  Pilar Cereceda (Chile) You can visit their very interesting site at the following URL  (Ver esta versión en Español AQUI )

You can obtain underground water anywhere world wide!

First of all you will have to dig a hole  one meter deep by one meter in diameter, having a cylinder shape. Do this little job carefully, so that the circle is even all round, as once you put the plastic Cone on top, the interior of the hole should be practically sealed, so that the “steam” dampness does not escape to the surface. Make sure that the hole is located in a clear area, so that it receives the maximum sunlight hours per day.

Buy a piece of transparent plastic, not too thick, not too thin, identical to the sample I have given you (only applicable in Arequipa, Peru), preferable from a roll with the following measurements: 150cms. Wide (double width) in equal longitudinal units (1.50, 3.00, 4.50 meters etc.)

Once having obtained the plastic sheeting, cut it in units of 1.50 meters long, this way you will obtain pieces 1.50 x 1.50 meters square. To start with (until you get the hang of it) simply place a piece of string in the middle of the square (X) Fig.1 and draw a circle, as if you were using a large compass, starting from any of the sides. As the plastic came in double width (tube shape) you will have cut two identical circles at once.

Now in order to simplify the cutting of circles, you can do the following: Once having obtained the plastic squares Fig.1. fold the square in two, joining AC with BD which will look like Fig.2. fold this piece in two again joining AC with BD, which results can be seen in Fig.3.  All A, B, C and D corners will now be together with X resulting as in Fig.4. Finally fold this piece in two again, uniting the two new corners 1 and 2, which will give the plastic a triangular shape.

To cut it, use a piece of string or whatever as a compass, and draw a circular arch, taking X as the center, take the other end of the string from the corner 1,2 drawing a circular line towards the line ABCD / X, having done this, cut all the plastic as is, and you will have two identical circles.

Now trace a one meter long straight line on the circumference of the circle between Y and Z, Fig.5. From the two points Y and Z draw two lines to the center of the circle X and cut out this segment. Join the line YX with the line ZX with a water proof material, so that the join does not become unstuck, should it become wet. You now have a cone ready to be placed inside the hole Fig.6

Now place a container at the bottom of the hole in order to collect the drops of water which will slide down into it, from the internal sides of the Plastic Cone. Carefully place the plastic Cone over the hole, leaving on the exterior a plastic ring (collar) between 5 and 10cms. wide, now place some stones, earth or sand over the collar, in order to secure the collar to the ground. Fig.7. Finally place a  small stone (weight) at the bottom of the exterior part of the Cone. There should be NO aperture at the bottom tip of the Cone.

Automatic Water Drip Feeder

Obtain a plastic bottle (the bigger the better) take off its plastic top and with a hand drill open a small hole in the center of the top using a 3/32 (0.093) drill bit, not a larger or smaller hole, if it is larger the water will empty too quickly, if too small, there will not be enough water dripping.  Make sure to drill the hole from the inside of the top  (not from the outside, as sometimes this causes small irregularities, which could trap small particles from the water, blocking the outlet.

Obtain a used evaporated milk tin etc. making sure that one of its tops are cut completely off. At the bottom of the tin, and close to its side, open a hole about the width of a pencil.Open a hole where you are going to plant the seed or small plant, next to it, place the tin almost completely buried with its bottom hole facing the seed / plant.

Make sure to fill the bottle with the least impurities as possible, screw on its top, place it upside down on top of the tin, tying the bottle to a small stick, so that it does not topple over with the wind, specially when the bottle is half empty.

This drip feed system is very efficient, it does not drip at night, due to the lower night temperature, and drips occasionally when cloudy. Its working system is due to the variation of pressure inside the bottle, when it is warm, there is more internal pressure, and less when it is cooler. How much did this automatic drip feeder cost you?, just the price of a 3/32 drill bit!

Collecting Potable Water from the Dew

Obtain a sheet or more, of Galvanized Tin, (I think they come in sheet sizes of 2 x 3 or 2 x 4 meters. Build a metal or wooden frame work, making sure it has an inclination of roughly 35º, the purpose of this, is once the Dew has condensed on the metal sheeting, it will run down to the bottom edge, where a horizontally cut in half plastic pipe will be placed, using a piece of hosing for connecting and conducting the water to a container, preferable having a narrow neck, in order to save evaporation from it.
Alternatively, a small V shape could be bent into the bottom of the metal sheeting, which could also be connected by a piece of hosing/funnel.

Apart from the Galvanized Metal Sheeting, a 1” thick sheet of white Tecnoport (polystyrene) will be required in order to cover the whole of the metal sheeting on one of its sides, this polystyrene sheet to be stuck to one side of the metal sheeting with an water proof glue. The idea is to insulate the ground warm air, trapping the cold atmospheric air on the Metal Sheet, which will cause the condensation of the Dew. Make sure to face the polystyrene towards the oncoming night wind / breeze.
Good luck, Anthony Gomez C Holley

Trapping Humidity from Underground

The most simplest way to trap the underground humidity, is by simply placing a plastic sheet on top of the ground, after having dug a 2” deep rectangular hole, then covering it with  2” of sand / soil. This method will help grow seeds or small plants directly from the soil. Simply make some small X cuts on the plastic sheeting (one inch cuts are sufficient, so as not to let the trapped humidity escape). The larger the extension of plastic sheeting, the more humidity trapped and retained.

Dew. This water can be harvested with simple collectors. See HERE  specially the third image down. Due to the large quantity of humidity in the desert,  as in the Human Settlements: "El Milagro", "UPIS Cristo Rey de La Joya", "La Florida", "San Jose", "El Milenio", "Los Medalos" etc. which manifests itself at night, a worthwhile amount of Water can be collected using the described method.

Free “Refrigeration” from a Clay Container

The construction of this “Refrigerator” is very simple, as an experiment, find any type of bowl, made of clay, metal or plastic, 2 to 3” high x about 16” in diameter, place a small support inside the bowl and water, about 4” high, so that the water does not wet whatever you have put on top of it. Place on the support whatever you wish to cool, then place a clay flower pot upside-down into the bowl and water, placing the “Refrigerator” out of doors in full sun. (Experiment with it in the shade, but I think you will find that in the sun it will become cooler) as it is the result of the water evaporating off the rough sides of the pot. It would be a good idea to place a plastic collar over the water container in order to save the external water evaporating too quickly.

This works like the human body, one perspires and the perspiration detaches it self from the skin, carrying with it the corporal heat, which in turn cools the body.

NOTE: It is best if the pot be rustically made, so that it has a rough surface, not smooth like most modern pots. Do not forget to block the pot's small hole, with either clay or cement, as the pot has to be hermetically sealed. The difference between the interior and exterior temperatures could be between 10º C a 15º C or more.

Once you have convinced your self the “Refrigerator” works, it would be a good idea to build a large, rough textured clay Dome, with a handle on one of its sides, to facilitate the lifting of same.                                                      Good luck, Anthony Gomez C Holley

Heating Water for free from the Sun

I have noticed that quite a few people heat up water with the sun, using plastic bottles, an excellent idea, but there are a couple of details needed for this process. So that the water heats up faster and be hotter, all that has to be done, is paint the whole of the bottle with black emulsion paint, not with gloss paint, the reason being, that the black emulsion paint absorbs all the light waves including the heat generating waves. All that shines and is not black reflects light and heat.

Having done this, fill the bottles and lay them on their side facing the sun, if possible on screwed up paper, rags, tecnoport etc. so that these materials can act as insulators, avoiding the loss of heat to the ground. Considering there are so many empty plastic bottles, you can heat up a lot of water for FREE!                                                                                          Good luck, Anthony Gomez C Holley

In these “modern” times, where water becomes more scarce, due to carelessness, indifference and human abuse towards our Environment, we are  NOW witnessing the lack of Water world wide, springs, rivers are all drying up, due to the exaggerated melting of our mountains ice and snow, which once upon a time were Glaciers, and the rapid los of our Polar Icebergs, all provoking the invasion of our deserts.

Now days it should be decreed by Law, that new home dwellings having access to gardens, orchards etc. should have a double, alternative drainage system for used water, one for the non contaminated water from, baths, showers, wash basins, washing machines, kitchens etc. which can include soapy water, which is not harmful to our loving plant life .
